Kayak Cumberland -- From Fernandina Beach to Cumberland Island on

For this kayak trip, we will meet at the
boat ramp located at the north end of 14th Street in Fernandina Beach, FL 32034. It is marked with the
YELLOW STAR on the map above. To get to our kayak trip on 2/__/08. This
trip includes about 5.25 miles of paddling each way. We will plan to do
some exploring on foot around Dungeness ruins and the south end of
Cumberland Island. |
DIRECTIONS:
From Jacksonville and points North or
South, take Interstate 95 to the exit for Highway A1A / 200 East/Yulee/Amelia Island. Follow Hwy
A1A / 200 East over the Intracoastal Waterway and past the intersection
with Sadler Road. Go north on 8th Street to Centre Street/Atlantic Avenue.
Turn right on Centre Street/Atlantic Avenue and go to 14th Street. Take a
left on 14th Street and follow it to the north end (Pogy Place) where the
boat ramp is located... or
From Jacksonville Beaches and points South, follow Hwy A1A north to Mayport. Take the Ferry across the St Johns River and continue north on Hwy A1A (take a right when leaving the Ferry). Stay on Hwy A1A until you reach Sadler Road.
Go north on 8th Street to Centre Street/Atlantic Avenue. Turn right on
Centre Street/Atlantic Avenue and go to 14th Street. Take a left on 14th
Street and follow it to the north end (Pogy Place) where the boat ramp is
located.
Wind and weather are unpredictable. This
kayak trip is for anyone who has experience and confidence in paddling
across some open water, such as the St Marys Entrance, which we will cross
to get to Cumberland Island. Each kayaker is responsible for himself or
herself. Kayakers should be sure to bring sufficient safety gear for this
trip; life jackets and other safety items must be provided by individuals
participating in this trip. We urge you to use and bring along sun block,
sun protection for lips and face, a hat, and other protective clothing, as
well as plenty of fluids and a snack or lunch. YOU WILL WANT TO HAVE
COMFORTABLE SHOES FOR WALKING ON CUMBERLAND ISLAND.
