Congratulations to all of the Teams competing in
The BEAR and The BEAR Sprint this year!
|
| It was a challenging course and an
unusually hot Florida day. This year's race was won by Team
TravelCountry.com/MightyDog, showing all the field why they are currently
holding the #1 ranking in the USARA National Ranking System. In addition
to being accomplished adventure racers, the members of Team
TravelCountry.com/MightyDog were great spokesmen (and woman) for the sport
of Adventure Racing. The race began with a gear check that included a team
challenge: blindfold half of your team and bring out one requested item of
BEAR Essentials gear at a time, while circling a dune next to the Main
Transition. Teams immediately found that communication and cooperation
were needed to efficiently complete this task. The next stage led the
Teams to down the beach and back into the woods to ride all of the bike
trails in the north section of Hanna Park, locating and identifying five
signs (some with puzzles) along the way. Upon completion of the first Bike
Stage, Teams had to make a choice between a Paddle Stage on the Atlantic
Ocean or a challenging portage and paddle on the Intracoastal Waterway to
the west of Hanna Park. In each case, there were checkpoints along the way
that needed to be identified and recorded. This marked the end of The BEAR
CUB Sprint Race.
As racers continued with the extended course of The BEAR,
they were directed to the beach for a 17 mile route that followed the
shoreline and returned. As racers took too much time in the earlier
stages, they found themselves facing an incoming tide -- and later racers
were confronted with soft sand to navigate on the beach at high tide. A
number of teams got started with smooth, packed beach conditions, but were
out so long that they had to push bikes through soft sand on the return to
the Main Transition. The final stage presented to racers was a Paddle
Sprint, in which Teams did a short portage of their kayaks to the ocean,
then had a choice of portaging, paddling, or even pulling their boats in
shallow water at the edge of the beach. Teams needed to reach the north
boundary of the park -- about 1.5 mile from the Main Transition -- and
return to finish the maximum number of stages in The BEAR Adventure Race.
The BEAR could also be said to finish with a delicious dinner catered by
Carrabba's Italian Grill that is a highlight of the Awards Celebration.
Our thanks to all the participants and to our supporters and sponsors,
too.
