The BEAR 2003
Adventure Race
RESULTS
|
|
| The BEAR Adventure Race
started in Hanna Park, a bit before dawn at 7:00 AM on October 12th, 2003.
Teams started with a Gear Check Relay on the sandy beach, followed by
their first crossing of The Great Wall upon entering the Main Transition
(MT) to get their boats for the launch into the surf. The Paddle Stage
took teams 2 miles on the ocean to the entry to the St Johns River and
another 2 miles in the river to Huguenot Park on the oceanfront.
There was a chance to stretch during the 3-mile run/trek to find
checkpoints in Huguenot Park before getting back into the boats for the
4-mile return paddle trip to Hanna Park via the Atlantic Ocean. Though
most teams made the journey to Huguenot, a dozen teams found the surf
conditions daunting and chose to wait for the paddlers to return, so that
these twelve teams could continue an abbreviated version of The BEAR. Good
sportsmanship and a desire to persevere were prominent in the twelve teams
that waited on the beach in the wind and rain. They cheered the returning
paddlers and in some cases assisted with retrieving kayaks and canoes from
the shoreline to the MT. |

|
 |
 |
| After the Paddle Stages, Teams began an Orienteering Stage along the
dunes and forest close to the beach. When the last of the Paddlers
returned, the twelve waiting teams had a penalty phase that led them back
into racing, though not officially competing with those who had completed
the Paddle. The Orienteering was followed by a Bike Stage that took
teams into the winding trails of Hanna Park. As teams returned from
the first Bike Stage, they were directed to begin a 5.8-mile beach trek,
which was followed by the second Bike Stage, directing teams to
locate a quote on top of a piling on the beach, 8.5 miles south of the
MT. A waist-deep wade against the current in the ocean completed the
race for the teams. A variety of physical and mental Mystery Events were
sprinkled among the stages in The BEAR. |

 |
| The weather, though predicted to be clear and calm, turned out to be
very windy and loaded with rain and mist. The day was overcast most of the
day. The northeast wind made it challenging to return on the long second
Bike Stage, though it was a blessing on the southward ride to get to the
poles. During the return trip, a number of teams used the required ropes
to pull tiring teammates back to the MT. |

 |
 |
 |
| All the teams exhibited great athleticism and determination during this
year's version of The BEAR Adventure Race. A great dinner was
catered by Carraba's Italian Grill at the awards ceremony. All finishing
teams will be sent custom-made BEAR medals -- and each member of the team
at the dinner got prizes in the drawings that followed the race awards. |

We congratulate all the teams for their efforts in The BEAR 2003. All
the teams did a great job taking on the challenges of The BEAR. We have
been reviewing the Team Surveys that were submitted at the dinner and we
are already making plans for improving the next version of The BEAR in
2004. We hope to see you there. You can send in a survey to give us more feedback

great photos of The BEAR 2003. |

After being stopped on the beach by the strong surf and current
at the beginning of the Paddle Stage, twelve teams showed excellent
sportsmanship, patiently waited in the wind and rain for the return of the
paddlers -- and began the remainder of The BEAR race again after a brief
penalty phase.
