Congratulations to all of the Teams competing in
The BEAR and The BEAR Sprint this year!

|
| The BEAR Adventure
Race includes a series of stages that must be completed within the
race time limits. Some Teams enter the BEAR Sprint with a 6-hour time
limit. Those entering The BEAR (10-hour limit) are provided with Stage
Instruction sheets to begin the race, and are given the next set of
instructions as they complete each stage. There was an intermediate
cut-off time at 5:00pm, after which Teams were not given the next set of
instructions that would clearly cause the Team to finish after the race
time limit of 10 hours. At the beginning of the races, both Sprint and
BEAR Teams are using the same instructions. In order to win The BEAR, a
Team must complete the most stages in the shortest time and stay within
the time limit. |
| The BEAR 2007 was held on a day that
started partly overcast and turned to heavy rain and thunderstorms. The race was
won by Team BAMF, made up of new adventure racers from
Jacksonville Beach and Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. With great teamwork and a
positive, go-go attitude, they showed that experience can be overcome by
enthusiasm and talent. |

|
| The BEAR 2007 race began with a gear check that included a team
challenge: bring out two requested items of
BEAR Essentials gear at a time, while carrying a teammate to a patch of
woods about 450 feet from the Main
Transition. Teams completed this task and headed out with their bikes on a
combination Bike/Coasteering Stage through the southern trails and along
the shore of the Tolomato River/Intracoastal Waterway (ICW). The next stage led the
Teams on a kayak portage to Shell Bluff and a paddle down the Tolomato
River/Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) and then up the Guana River to return to
the MT. A Trek Stage followed, with Teams headed to an observation tower
overlooking the marshes and the ICW. The end of the Trek Stage represented
the end of the BEAR Sprint Adventure Race. |
| The BEAR Adventure Race continued with a
long bike stage northward into the Wildlife Management Area (WMA) of the
Reserve. Teams rode through some trails in the WMA that can be soft white
sand in dry weather, but were drenched with the day's heavy rains. Some
Teams were more successful with their movement on the trails and access
roads, while others struggled with the sandy areas. Following the second
bike stage, Teams had a short portage and paddle stage with a trek at the
midway point. |
| In each stage, there were checkpoints along the way
that needed to be identified and recorded. To win, Teams needed to finish the maximum number of stages in The BEAR Adventure Race.
The BEAR could also be said to finish with a delicious dinner catered by
Carrabba's Italian Grill that is a highlight of the Awards Celebration.
Our thanks to all the participants and to our supporters and sponsors,
too.
